"It was the same faces on the podium as last year, only the positions have changed", said the newly crowned and jubilant Swiss champion Chrigel Maurer after the price giving ceremony in Sessa/Ticino. A year ago, he had to content himself with third place, after winning the title in 2004. Steve Cox, the reigning world champion and ADVANCE pilot, occupied third place this year.
Karin Appenzeller achieved a superb performance. She not only won the ladies' title but also occupied 5th place in the overall rankings ! Such a feat is rare indeed in a competition at this high level. In view of the fact that Karin is Chrigel's girlfriend, the term "double" thus takes on another, quite different meaning …
On account of the rather difficult weather (with north f?hn at times), only three flights could be counted at the SC, all of which were won by ADVANCE pilots. Victory in the first heat went to Chrigel, the second was won by ADVANCE newcomer Andy Aebi and the third once again by Chrigel. However simple the story may sound now, Chrigel Maurer did not have it all his own way. Because, after the second heat, his prospects for winning had been anything but favourable. Nevertheless, a start-to-finish triumph over a distance of 40 km in the ultimate heat finally settled the matter.
Many congratulations to all pilots !
